Bojana Jankovic Weatherly will talk about commonly encountered toxins that we are exposed to daily – the toxins that come from household products, skin care products, and food. Many of these have been found in umbilical cord blood or urine tests in humans. A number of these toxins are banned in Europe. I will discuss sources and mechanism of action of toxins that have been associated with development of chronic disease, including metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disease, hormone imbalance, infertility, cancer and nervous system disorders. This presentation will include a review of evidence-based effects of toxins such as BPA and similar compounds used to replace them in food containers and plastics that also have endocrine disrupting properties. It will also include research on phthalates, found in personal care products and PVC plastic, as well as volatile organic compounds found in household cleaning products, as well as the common exposures to toxins from food and discuss adverse effects of pesticides (including glyphosate and chlorpyrifos). The talk will provide strategies to avoid these commonly encountered toxins, and discuss evidence-based resources that are easily accessible and provide actionable advice
